COLUMBUS — Oklahoma’s Orlando Brown, the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2016, is the son of former Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Orlando “Zeus” Brown.
The older Brown played 10 seasons for the Browns and the Baltimore Ravens but is possibly best known for a 199 incident in which he shoved an official to the ground after a penalty flag thrown by that official struck him in the eye.
He was suspended indefinitely but reinstated and went on to start 119 NFL games. He sued the league for $200 million dollars, saying he was temporarily blinded by the thrown weighted flag and received an undisclosed settlement.
“Zeus” Brown died in 2011 of complications of diabetes.
BURROW SIGHTING: Back-up quarterback Joe Burrow participated during pre-game warm-ups, including throwing passes.
Burrow suffered a broken thumb 2 1/2 weeks ago in practice. OSU coach Urban Meyer said Burrow was “pretty close” to returning on the Big Ten football coaches teleconference on Tuesday.
NOBODY’S PERFECT: Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield missed more passes on Oklahoma’s first series (3) than he did during the entire game (1) in the Sooners’ opening game against UTEP last week.
GAME DAY RETURNS: ESPN’s College GameDay returned to Columbus for the sixteenth time on Saturday. It was at Indiana last week for the Buckeyes’ game and also was at the most recent OSU home game before Saturday, last year’s Michigan game.
OPENING GAME STREAK: Ohio State had won 38 consecutive home openers, dating back to a loss to Penn State in 1978 in Woody Hayes’ final season as coach, going into Saturday night’s game. OSU was 119-9-4 in home openers before this season.
