SPENCERVILLE — Sure there was plenty of work to be done.
However, Jim Hirn knew that the 1931 Ford Model A Coup he bought 28 years ago was built to last.
“I heard about it, and it had just been sitting over around Buckland,” Hirn said. “The top was off of it, and the carburetors were tied up. But I knew the guy who built it, so I knew it was done right.”
Hirn bought the car and went to work on it quickly, having it road worthy in just a couple of months. Throughout the years, he has done the normal maintenance on the vehicle, including rebuilding the carburetors. The car was caught in a flood once in Louisville, Ky., and three connecting rods were bent and had to be repaired. The car runs on a 1957 Pontiac engine. Otherwise, the car has served as transportation for many trips for Hirn and his wife.
“We’ve driven it to Florida,” Hirn said. “We have taken it on several trips to Gatlinburg, Tenn. When we went to Florida, we drove straight through without any problems whatsoever.”
Hirn said he has been approached many times with offers to purchase the car. However, he said it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
“It has become part of the family,” Hirn said. “It has been a lot of fun. My wife says the car is staying right here.”
