Ex-Lima Senior coach Fell hired at Arizona school

MESA, Ariz. — Mike Fell, who resigned as Lima Senior’s football coach earlier this month, has been hired as head football coach at Mountain View High School in Mesa, Arizona.

The suburban Phoenix school plays in Division 6A, the largest in Arizona. It has won eight state championships in football, the most recent one in 2002.

Fell was hired Tuesday morning and will begin working at Mountain View in April.

Fell’s teams had a 22-11 record in three seasons at Lima Senior. He has a career record of 191-94 in 26 seasons as a head coach at Columbus Grove, Celina, Ada and Lima Senior. Thirteen of his teams qualified for the state playoffs.

When Fell announced his resignation at Lima Senior on Jan. 7, he said he and his wife, Lisa, were moving to Arizona and that he had applied for some coaching jobs in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Their daughter, Sam, moved to Phoenix around a year ago.

“I had applied (at Mountain View) over Christmas when we decided to move out there,” Fell said. He flew to Arizona for an interview after resigning at Lima Senior and returned for a second interview on Monday.

Shortly after the second interview, the superintendent of schools told him he had the job. More than 50 coaches applied for the job and eight got interviews.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to coach in a state that has excellent high school football,” Fell said. “Mountain View is in the top 10 academically and athletically in Arizona. I’m looking forward to bringing them back to the status they’re used to. I’m just going to coach. I’m just going to do my best.”

Mountain View, which opened in 1976, has won state championships in 10 sports. Former Ohio State quarterback Joe Germaine quarterbacked the Toros in his high school days.
