LIMA — By tradition, the Lima Symphony Orchestra performs on the second weekend of February every year.
By chance, that date fell on Valentine’s Day this year, so the concert will be centered around the lover’s holiday.
“It happened to fall on that day, so we planned it accordingly,” said LSO Executive Director Elizabeth Brown. “We programmed a concert built around love.”
“Music of the Heart” will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Civic Center. Tickets are $25 and $30 for adults and $10 and $15 for students. An after-show dessert will also be served for an additional cost of $10. Tickets can be purchased by calling 419-222-5701.
Piano soloist Scott Cuellar is the guest musician, and he has performed with the orchestra in the past. Selections include Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Concerto No. 2,” Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” and finishes with Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake.”
Brown said people attending the show are also asked to wear red in celebration of Go Red for Women. The LSO has teamed with Lima Memorial Health System and St. Rita’s Medical Center in bringing awareness to the No. 1 cause of death for women, heart disease.
“Lima Memorial and St. Rita’s have underwritten the orchestra for a long time,” Brown said. “We appreciate their support and applaud them for the efforts to treat and cure the number one cause of death in American women.”
Cuellar earned a master’s degree at Juilliard School and is now a doctoral student at Rice University.
