BLUFFTON — Kevin and Cindy Spencer have been described as “redefining the art of illusion and shattering stereotypes of the traditional magician and assistant.”

The pair brings their award-winning act to Bluffton University’s Founders Hall Thursday.

The Spencers present a high-tech stage show combining drama, comedy, romance and suspense with illusions and special effects. There show has taken on more popularity because of the pair’s help with worthy causes.

“Magic wands don’t always belong with black hats and rabbits,” said Kevin Spencer. “Sometimes they belong in hospitals where frail hands learn tricks, and the magic is in the healing.”

“People who may not have been motivated to re-learn skills of daily living often become enthusiastic about learning magic tricks,” said Cindy Spencer. “The movements required to learn the tricks help them achieve new skill levels while increasing motivation and self-image.”

For their work, the Spencers received the Harry Chapin Award for contributions to humanity for their work in the field of rehabilitation medicine. Their curriculum “Hocus Focus” is used by many special education teachers to explore new skill levels and improve existing skills.
