Ohio gets more snow in wake of bitterly cold temperatures

CINCINNATI (AP) — Snow returned to Ohio on Saturday, creating slick and hazardous roads across the state.

It began falling in the early morning hours after several days of bitter low temperatures and dangerous wind chills. Some areas of Ohio had received 4 to 8 inches by afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Numerous fender benders were reported in Cincinnati, where some vehicles could be seen sliding backward while trying to drive up icy, snow-covered roads Saturday morning.

Some colleges, universities and other schools canceled classes and other activities, and counties in several parts of Ohio urged motorists to stay off the roads unless driving was necessary.

Parking bans were in effect in many cities as crews worked to clear snow-covered streets.

Temperatures in some areas rose to 32 degrees or slightly higher in southern and central portions of Ohio.

A cold front moving through the state later Saturday was expected to bring drier air, ending most precipitation by midnight, other than some light snow in parts of northern Ohio, said Steve Hrebenach, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Wilmington.

The forecast called for a mostly dry Sunday, with temperatures again falling down into single digits by Sunday night.
