O-G’s Samuelson ties for 6th in backstroke at state prelims

CANTON — Kathryn Samuelson of Ottawa-Glandorf led area swimmers who qualified for today’s finals of the Division II Swimming & Diving State Tournament at the C.T. Branin Natatorium with a tie for sixth place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.03 seconds during preliminaries held Thursday.

Boys from the area joining her in the finals by finishing in the top 16 in their respective events include in the 50 freestyle Wapakoneta’s 7. Charlie Sutton (seventh, 21.78), Ada’s Mitchell Wilcox (11th, 21.94), Shawnee’s Cobie Mikesell (Shawnee), (12th, 22.04) and Celina’s Mason Baker (tie for 14th, 22.14), Mikesell in the 100 freestyle (16th, 47.99), the Shawnee (Mikesell, Noah Curl, Chris Soules and Joey Ellis, eighth, 1:28.24) and Wapak (Wesley Ruedebusch, Michael Johnston, Sutton and Michael Zwez, 11th, 1:29.72) 200 freestyle relay teams, Indian Lake’s Skyler Tavenner in the 100 backstroke (ninth, 53.83), Wilcox in the 100 breaststroke (16th, 1:01.91) and the Shawnee 400 freestyle relay team of Mikesell, Curl Soules, and Ellis, seventh, 3:14.83).

Other area girls moving on to the finals include: the Ottawa-Glandorf 200 medley relay team of Samuelson, Brooke Kleman, Amber Ellerbrock, Briana Fenbert (14th, 1:52.64), Wapak’s Josie Miller in the 50 freestyle (tied for ninth, 24.45), the Wapak (Miller, Sierra Sammons, Jordyn Law, Abbi Gesler, 14th, 1:41.24) and Celina (Megan Muhlenkamp, McKenna Black, Amanda Slechter, Cami Dzendzel, 16th, 1:41. 57) 200 freestyle relay teams and Kenton’s Mo Gray in the 100 breaststroke (ninth, 1:07.25).

Boys basketball

Minster 71, Bradford 39

BRADFORD — Coach Mike Lee got his 300th career victory as the visiting Wildcats got out of the gate fast, owning a 19-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Josh Nixon had 12 points and Jacob Stechschulte scored 11 for Minster.

Delphos Jefferson 69, Fort Jennings 54

DELPHOS — The host Wildcats outscored the Musketeers 18-9 in the third quarter after owning a 33-31 edge at halftime. Trey Smith had 31 points and Jay Stockwell scored 18 for Delphos Jefferson. Austin Kehres had 20 points and Drew Grone scored 12 for Fort Jennings.

Continental 48, Pandora-Gilboa 37

CONTINENTAL — The host Pirates outscored Rockets 17-2 in the second quarter on their way to victory. Trevor Williamson had 19 points and Gabe Williams scored 12 for Continental. Colin Fenstermaker had 17 points and Drew Johnson scored 10 for Pandora-Gilboa.

Allen East 69, Arcadia 54

HARROD — Allen East built a 21-10 first quarter lead and went on to earn its eighth win of the season. Spencer Miller (19), Luke Perkins (15) and Logan Ryan (13) all scored in double digits for the host Mustangs (8-14).

Leipsic 61, Hopewell 55

LEIPSIC — Isaiah Lomeli had 29 points and Nate Brecht scored 14 for Leipsic which shot 48 percent from the field.

Riverside 72, Hardin Northern 43

DE GRAFF — Zach Wilhelm had 12 points and Andrew Stump scored 11 for Hardin Northern.

Edgerton 54, Paulding 48

PAULDING — Paulding fell to 11-10 on the season after being outrebounded 25-18 and both team shooting 44 percent from the field.

Adams Central 43, Parkway 34

MONROE, Ind. — Tanner Bates had 11 points and Brandon Gibson scored 10 for Parkway.

Girls basketball

All-NWC teams

Tori Wyss of Ada has been selected the Northwest Conference Player of the Year in girls basketball.

Joining her on the conference first team are Lindsey Motycka and Emily Bauer of Crestview, Jade Clement of Columbus Grove and Julia Thatcher of Lincolnview. Crestview’s Greg Rickard was named the NWC’s Coach of the Year.

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS — Morgan Schaeffer won twice to lead the Ohio Northern women’s tennis team to a 9-0 sweep of Ursuline on Thursday indoors at the Mayfield Heights Racquet Club.

The Polar Bears improved to 3-1 on the season, while the NCAA Division II Arrows fell to 0-1.
