Lima YMCA to start wheelchair basketball program

LIMA — The Lima Family YMCA will be starting a wheelchair basketball program on March 11, the first program of its kind in the Lima area.

“We’ve had some interest in people wanting to do this,” YMCA vice-president Terri Averesch said. “It is for both kids that are in wheelchairs and also for kids that have mobility problems and have to be in wheelchairs when they go long distances or can’t run up and down the basketball court.”

The program, intended for both boys and girls 8 years of age and older, was made possible in part because of a grant from the Rotary Foundation. The baskets at the YMCA are already capable of being lowered to the proper height for wheelchair players.

Averesch is looking for adults to help with the program, as well.

“If there are enough adults who are interested, we can also start something with them,” she said.

The program will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday from March 11 to May 27. The cost is $10 for YMCA members and $20 for nonmembers. To join, contact program director Alicia Bell at 419-223-6045, ext. 114 or by email at [email protected].
