LIMA — ArtSpace/Lima Operations Manager Bill Sullivan said the annual Kewpee High School Art Invitational gives high school students a chance to “take the next step.”

“Students get to participate in a professional atmosphere outside of the school,” Sullivan said. “They are being judged by someone other than their teachers or parents.”

The 27th annual exhibitition opens today at ArtSpace/Lima. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

Sullivan said two professional jurors are used each year to critique the work, which features the categories of sculpture, photography, painting, digital media, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture, jewelry and drawing. This year, 104 works were accepted into the exhibit from 94 students representing 21 area high schools.

“The students must first get selected by their teachers,” Sullivan said. “They then must go through the professional jurors, so they go through two jury processes. … They are participating in the professional arts process. There is plenty of encouragement for high school kids in sports. This show is designed to encourage students in the arts.”

Awards will be announced at the reception tonight.
