Group raises money for arts

LIMA — For some, art is a form of expression, of emotion.

Just look at work from Pablo Picasso’s “Blue Period” — of period of his life, in the early 1900s, in which the artist was so depressed his paintings became so monochromatic that everything became dark shades of blue and green.

It was only until recent years that others began to tap into the emotion art expressed, using the practice in mainstream therapy techniques. The idea helped to inspire the program and art studio, Awakening Minds Art.

As a nonprofit organization, Awakening Minds Art serves to provide therapeutic and educational programming through art. Originally a part of a nationwide campaign, it later took a different path, first as a traveling program visiting homes, schools and students, before finding a home in a variety of locations, including Findlay, Lima and Delphos, according to the website.

Realizing the importance of Awakening Minds Art’s mission and service, Ohio State University Lima’s Education Club has taken it upon themselves to host a fundraiser — Paint and Partake, according to a press release.

Of course, what better way to raise funds for a program emphasizing art than allowing others to pick up the brush, too. In this case, fundraiser participants will not only be able to make a donation but grab some snacks and materials to create Buckeye paintings of their own.

The Paint and Partake Fundraiser is planned for 12:30 to 2 p.m. March 2 in Galvin Hall, Room 124. The cost to participate is $15. Of each ticket, $5 will go toward the donation.

In a YouTube video promoting the event, member Emily Frick said the group’s goal is to have at least 48 people in attendance. Tickets will be sold at the door.

Payment or donations are accepted in cash or in check made out to the education club.
