LIMA — Lima City Council member Derry Glenn will be attending the first meeting of the Ohio Task Force on Community-Police Relations Monday at Central State University in Wilberforce, a meeting he is looking forward to with great interest.
“I’m very excited to go down there and represent the City of Lima,” he said. “This is something that I hope to bring back to the city when I get back because it’s really needed.”
Glenn applauded Gov. John Kasich’s quick response to this issue after the shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice in November in Cleveland.
“I appreciate what Governor Kasich’s doing, trying to mend relationships with the police department after what happened in Cleveland,” he said. “Hopefully they can include some of the things we’re doing in Lima and some of the problems we’ve had.”
Glenn confirmed that as of Friday, five people from Lima will be attending this task force, including him. They will be joining representatives from various law enforcement agencies throughout the state, a number of community leaders and church representatives. He is hoping to see more representation from Lima at Monday’s meeting, along with seeing certain issues addressed by the task force.
“The main thing we want to bring back is how we can go about recruiting minority police officers and what tools police departments are working on to improve relationships with the community,” he said.
Glenn noted that because he would be attending the task force meeting, he would not be present at Monday’s city council meeting.
