LIMA — The friends and family of a local couple who lost their home of 40 years to a fire are holding a fundraiser.
The fundraiser for Don and Betty Boroff will be from 2 to 8 p.m. March 21 at the Knights of Columbus at 810 S. Cable Road. There will be food, 50/50 raffles, auction items and live entertainment.
There is a $5 door fee to get inside the fundraiser and the spaghetti dinner catered by Café Milano costs $11.
The Boroffs’ house on Fort Amanda Road was destroyed in a fire Nov. 5. The couple raised three children in the home. They have no insurance and have to start over, said Clayton Bacon, a relative.
They were in the process of remodeling the house and were attempting to switch insurance companies but struggled to find a new company to provide insurance because the house was in the middle of a remodel, Bacon said.
Those arranging the fundraiser are seeking donations from local businesses. Anyone wanting to make a donation to the Boroff fundraiser can call Mary Bacon at 419-236-0156 or it can be deposited in the Boroff Fund at Superior Federal Credit Union.
The fire began in the garage and the exact cause was still under investigation. Don Boroff woke to the smell of smoke and then woke his wife who discovered the fire. The couple escaped but without anything, Bacon said.
“It went so fast they barely got out. She couldn’t even get her purse,” he said.
The couple are staying with one of their daughters in the meantime until they can raise enough money to get another place, Bacon said.
Don Boroff is disabled from a severe stroke in 1999 and Betty Boroff remains at her job of 35 years working at Lima Municipal Court for Judge RicKard Workman. Don Boroff is retired from the Allen County Sheriff’s Office.
