LIMA — The Lima Area Concert Band Flute Choir will be in concert Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church downtown, part of the Ronald W. Richards Music Series.

One of the event’s organizers, Lucy Altstaetter, said the funds raised from the event go to the Ronald E. Richards Scholarship, which provides college scholarships to to local students who intend to make teaching music a career. Richards was a long-time music director with the Lima schools and music director at the church.

“The concert is free, but we take a freewill offering at the performance,” Alstaetter said.

Alstaetter said the performance will last a little more than an hour with an intermission. She said the performances will vary, inlcuding a piece with castanets played by Jim Leaman, Native American flute played by Dan Altstaetter, penny whistle played by Jeff Squire, a bass flute solo performed by Stacee Kalla and an alto flute solo played by Lucy Altstaetter. The choir will also perform “The Girl from Ipanema,” “The Magic Flute in 5 Minutes” and “Pavanne” by Faure, which will be dedicated to Phyllis Wentz, who was a long time chairwoman of this scholarship.

The Lima Kiwanis Club and a committee choose the scholarship winners each year.
