MINSTER — The Coldwater girls bowling team turned away an upset bid by Defiance to win the Divison II sectional championship at Community Lanes on Friday.

The format was three traditional 10-pin games and six baker games over the Kegel pattern known as “Bourbon Street.”

Coldwater opened with a 888 but it was Defiance that took the early lead with a score of 930. Defiance was handled pretty easily earlier this season by league champion Wapak so the early jump did come, as somewhat of a surprise as did the 910 that Defiance rolled in game two.

Coldwater responded in the same game with a 1,046 to take a 94-pin lead.

The traditional games ended with Coldwater shooting a 938 game and building a lead of 184 pins over Defiance heading into the baker format. At that point two of the four district tickets had been punched.

Defiance outscored Coldwater 1,056-1,013 in the baker set to make it closer.

Shannon Osterfeld of Coldwater tallied a 601 to take individual honors with Josee Hale of Defiance just behind at 598. Paige Hartings, Emily Fortener, Jessica Butler and and Madison Fox with series between 550 and 578.

Lydia Shenk, a senior at Temple Christian also secured her spot in singles action at the district with games of 176,164 and 178 for a 518 set.

Rachel Wehrman and Abigayle Hausfeld of Minster and Amanda Stachler of Parkway also advanced to district singles.

Patrick Henry finished third in the sectional with St Marys the fourth squad to advance.

Minster and Parkway as well as Ceclia Riepenhoff, the very talented freshman from LCC, were among those unable to advance.
