ADA — The Ohio Northern men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams came away with victorries over Baldwin Wallace on Saturday at the ONU Sports Center Natatorium.
In the men’s event, the Polar Bears clinched at least a a share of their ninth consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title on Senior Day with a 180-39 victory.
The Polar Bears improved to 7-1 overall and finish 4-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference dual meet action, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-7, 0-3.
The Polar Bears won 11 of the 12 events, led by sophomore John Raker.
Raker won the 200 I.M. in 2:03.70 and won the 500 free in 5:00.07.
In the women’s event, ONU celebrated Senior Day with a 156-72 victory.
The Polar Bears improved to 3-6 overall and are 3-1 in OAC dual meets, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 5-5, 1-2.
The Polar Bears won 10 of the 13 events to post the victory.
Senior Ashley Zoeller and junior Allison Lohnes paced ONU by winning two events each.
Zoeller won the 200 free in 2:03.99 and the 500 free in 5:38.64 and Lohnes won the 200 I.M. in 2:16.27 and the 100 back in 1:01.32.
Men’s basketball
Baldwin Wallace 83, ONU 62
BEREA — Senior Issiah Roux scored a team-high 11 points for ONU at Ursprung Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears fell to 7-8 overall and 2-6 in the OAC while Baldwin Wallace improved to 11-3 and 5-2 in the OAC.
Bluffton 72, Transylvania 65
BLUFFTON — Bluffton took on Transylvania University for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference bout with tournament implications. The Pioneers came into the game with an overall record of 6-8 and HCAC mark of 3-4 to take on the Beavers who were sitting at 7-7 as well as the same 3-4 record in conference. Both teams were looking to move to .500 and put themselves in a solid position with the second time through the HCAC just one week away. The Beavers were able to forge a comeback to win their second straight at home.
Lima Central Catholic graduate Billy Taflinger came up big for Bluffton as he had 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting, adding a career-high eight rebounds and three assists. Thayne Recker was a perfect 8-for-8 at the stripe on his way to a 14-point game to go along with nine rebounds and two assists. Austin Rohde had a career-high tying 14 points, three boards and three assists. Jackson Center grad Trey Elchert dished out a career-high six assists as well.
UNOH 78, Siena Heights 64
ADRIAN, Mich. — Twenty-second ranked University of Northwestern Ohio (15-5, 10-2 WHAC) moved into second place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Athletics standings – thanks to a Concordia University loss earlier in the day – with a win over Siena Heights (8-12, 4-8).
Lawrence Jackson led the visiting Racers with 16 points and six rebounds. Josh Scott added 13 points and seven assists, and Aaron Cross and Ed Jenkins scored 11 points apiece.
Women’s basketball
Transylvania 87, Bluffton 72
BLUFFTON — Transylvania was just too much for Bluffton Beavers to handle, as the 19th-ranked Pioneers improved to 8-0 in the HCAC and 13-1 overall.
The Beavers (10-5, 5-3 in HCAC) finished with four scorers in double figures, led by 17 from Taylor Whitaker to go along with three assists. Freshman Macey Sheerer chipped in 14, while Kaitylyn Pennekamp had 12 with six boards. Senior Mikayla Coburn, an Upper Scioto graduate, finished with 10. Taylor Knight dished out a career-high tying 10 dimes to go along with her seven points.
OSU Lima 79, Akron/Wayne College 50
ORRVILLE — Megan Imwalle and Katelyn Georgens had 22 points, Hannah Sensibaugh scored 21 and Paige Buroker had 12 points for OSU Lima/Rhodes State.
Siena Heights 78, UNOH 54
ADRIAN, Mich. — The 17th-ranked Siena Heights Saints (15-4, 10-2 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Athletics) pulled down 20 offensive rebounds, while the University of Northwestern Ohio (8-12, 6-6 WHAC) grabbed only nine. As a result, the Saints held a 23-8 edge in second chance points that helped hand UNOH its second straight defea.
Shakeia Salters had 14 points and Madison Coldren scored 12 for the Racers.
Wrestling
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — The Ohio Northern wrestling team finished second with a 3-1 record at the 2015 Wabash (Ind.) Max Servies Duals at Chadwick Court.
The Polar Bears (12-3 overall) won their pool with a 3-0 record after defeating the Wabash JV squad 35-6, Calumet-St. Joseph (Ind.) 45-6 and Mt St. Joseph 51-0.
In the championship match, ONU fell to No. 4-ranked Wabash 26-12.
Senior Cole Cochran, freshman Evan Morgan and senior All-American Cody Lovejoy each went 4-0 on the day to pace the Polar Bears.
Cochran went 4-0 at 133 pounds to improve to 19-8 on the season.
Morgan was 4-0 at 149 pounds and is now 20-10 on the year.
Lovejoy, who is ranked No. 1 nationally at heavyweight, was 4-0 with pins in all three of his bouts to improve to 28-0 on the season with an impressive 19 pins.
Men’s track
FINDLAY — Robbie Brinkman led the Ohio Northern men’s track and field team as it competed in the Northwest Ohio Invitational, Friday evening at the Robert A. Malcolm Athletic Center in Findlay.
The meet was not scored.
Brinkman won the triple jump with a final jump of 40 feet, 9 1/2 inches.
New Bremen grad Dillon Webster set a Findlay school record in the 500 meter dash with a winning time of 1 minute, 3.34 seconds. Teammate Taylor Miller, who went to Waynesfield-Goshen, won the shot put with a Division 2-leading throw of 59 feet, 11 inches.
Bluffton University’s Ty White topped all competitors at 800 meters, winning the event in a field of 28 with a time of 1:58.59.
Women’s track
FINDLAY — ONU traveled to the University of Findlay for their first indoor meet of the season, the Northwest Ohio Meet on Friday.
Dianna Johnson-Ward, a Bath grad, won the triple jump with a jump of 33 feet, 4 1/2 inches.
Leipsic grad Kendra Averesch had a first place shot put toss of 53 feet, 7 inches, placing her atop the Findlay record book as she beat her own mark which she set last season. The throw, which is the best in Division 2 this year, also is an automatic qualifier for the NCAA championship meet later this winter.
Teammate Lydia Guagenti, a Bluffton graduate, won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches. The Oilers’ Shelby Stump, a Hardin Northern alum, won the 300 meter dash with a time of 42.48 seconds. She was also a member of the winning 4 by 400 meter relay team which had a time of 4 minutes, 4.66 seconds.
Silver Gloves
CINCINNATI — Lima South Side boxers Emilio Rettig and Jahosh Allen advanced to nationals during regional competition.
