Shawnee High School has hired a member of a famous Ohio football family as its new football coach.

Jon Carpenter, son of former NFL running back Rob Carpenter and brother of ex-Ohio State linebacker Bobby Carpenter, was announced as the Indians coach on Tuesday.

Carpenter played football at the University of Cincinnati and has been a graduate assistant at Cincinnati, Notre Dame, Northern Colorado and Ohio State.

Carpenter worked with the linebackers and co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell last season at OSU.

He replaces Steve Owen, who resigned after two seasons as Shawnee’s coach.

Carpenter got most of his playing time at UC as a linebacker. All of his brothers also played college football.

Bobby Carpenter was a first-round NFL draft choice out of Ohio State and played seven seasons in the pros. Another brother, George, played at Marshall and his youngest brother, Nathan, was a team captain at Ohio University last season.

Rob Carpenter played 10 years in the NFL and has been the long-time football coach at Lancaster High School. He coached all four of his sons in high school.

Jon Carpenter has a bachelor’s degree in industrial management and math from the University of Cincinnati and a master’s degree from UC in educational administration.
