Progress made in restoring school media center

OTTAWA — Repairs in Ottawa Elementary School’s media center are underway.

Early last month, a leak from a hairline crack in sprinkler pipes damaged the school’s media center. The school’s staff, faculty and administration were quick to act, fixing the crack and clearing out the center within the same day. Restoration crews were also measuring the amount of moisture in the center and sucking out excess water in carpets.

Superintendent Don Horstman said the damage was limited.

Soon after, the school began repairs with help from local carpenters. On Wednesday, the elementary school posted pictures on its Facebook page documenting its progress, showing fixed and painted ceilings and walls.

To restore just the dry wall cost the school $6,000. Horstman said there’s no estimate for the rest of the reconstruction, including drying the carpets, cabinetry, books or bookshelves.

According to the Facebook post, the school expects to have the media center “up and running soon.” Horstman said that could hopefully mean it’d be open in a couple of weeks. For now, staff and organizations including the local library are working together to provide books to classes.
