LIMA — Fatal traffic accidents in Allen County were up in 2014 compared to 2013, according to the Lima-Allen County Safe Community Coalition.

In 2014, a total of nine fatal crashes were reported, compared to seven in 2013.

Each traffic fatality has a comprehensive cost of $5.38 million, said Evelyn Smith, associate planner of the LACSC. The dollar amount stems from the comprehensive economic cost loss of that person’s life.

Smith said that dollar amount is what would have been put back into the economy if the person had not died. The total comprehensive costs for 2014 Allen County’s fatal crashes was $48.4 million.
