UNOH receives NAIA tourney berth

LIMA — The University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team found out Wednesday it earned an at-large berth in the 24th annual NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Championships.

The Racers (25-7) will take on the Union College (Ky.) Bulldogs (29-4) at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Point Lookout, Missouri.

This is the first-ever trip to the tournament for the Racers.

Women’s basketball

All-HCAC

Bluffton University’s Taylor Whitaker has been selected first team All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Teammates Macey Sheerer and Taylor Knight were named second team and honorable mention respectively. Sheerer was also named to the All-Freshman Team. The All-Sportsmanship Team included Bluffton’s Abby Jerger.

Baseball

ONU 21, Finlandia 2

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Senior Dan Belliveau drilled an inside-the-park grand slam to lead the Ohio Northern baseball team to a victory at Terry Park.

The Polar Bears (3-1 overall) pounded out 20 hits from 13 different batters. The Lions, who hail from Hancock, Mich., in the upper peninsula, fall to 0-5.

Bluffton sweeps

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Luke Hickey had eight hits, including five doubles, and four RBIs as the Beavers defeated Northland College (16-3) and Finlandia (24-1) at Terry Park to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Softball

Bluffton wins 2

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Bluffton had to delay its game one celebration as Mount St. Marys put up six runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth, but starter Chloe Shell re-entered in the sixth and closed out her third victory of the season (3-0) with four straight outs, securing the 13-10 win. The Beavers (7-1) rolled off nine runs on six hits against Northland University in the first inning of game two on their way to a 17-4 victory.

ONU drops 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – Ohio Northern fell to Muhlenberg (Pa.) 3-2 and Augustana (Ill.) 10-5 at the Minneola Complex in Minneola, Fla.

Ohio Northern fell to 4-3 on the season.

Women’s tennis

ONU sweeps

GLENDALE/PHOENIX, Ariz. — Ohio Northern swept a pair of matches at Glandale (Ariz.) Community College and at Paradise Valley (Ariz.) Community College on Wednesday.

The Polar Bears (5-1) topped both schools by identical 9-0 scores.

Christina Corbean won twice at first singles and joined Brittany Toney in winning once at first doubles. Lynn Kelly and Taryn Stromback also won a first doubles match.
