Racers get sweep against Cornerstone in baseball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The University of Northwestern Ohio baseball team got a sweep of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent Cornerstone University on Saturday.

UNOH, ranked No. 23 in the latest NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, scored early and often in game one of the double-header, building an 8-4 lead on its way to an 8-5 victory. In the back half or the doubleheader, UNOH (25-7, 13-1 WHAC) took an early 2-0 lead but Cornerstone (10-21, 3-11 WHAC) rallied to tie the game and force extra innings before UNOH prevailed 3-2 in nine innings. The Racers had gone 35 straight games without going into extra innings.

Softball

Bluffton gets sweep

CLEVELAND — Bluffton University kept its momentum rolling and swept a doubleheader over a Case Western Reserve squad that shared the UAA conference championship in 2014. The Beavers won game one, 11-7, before quashing a seventh-inning rally to take the nightcap, 3-2. Bluffton improved its record to 13-12, while Case Reserve dropped to 16-7 on the campaign.

ONU ties for 1st

GALENA — Sophomore Blaine Ricketts fired a 9-over par 74-79 — 153 to lead Ohio Northern to a tie for first place at the seven-team Capital Purple & White Invitational on Thursday and Friday at the Royal American Links and New Albany Links courses.

The Polar Bears (29-15) shot a 321-307—628 and finished tied with Otterbein, which shot a 318-310—628.

Ricketts tied for fourth out of 46 golfers with his 153.

Women’s golf

ONU finishes 5th

GALENA — Senior Megan Conley and sophomores Ariana Tomasula and Hannah Whisler all shot 186s to lead Ohio Northern to a fifth place finish at the 10-team Capital Purple & White Invitational on Thursday and Friday at the Royal American Links and New Albany Links courses.

The trio of Polar Bears finished tied for 16th out of 52 golfers.

Ohio Northern (22-22 overall) carded a 376-364—740. Trine (Ind.) won the team title with a 350-344 — 694.
