Lima Senior’s Simpson, Thompson first team all-TRAC

Lima Senior juniors Xavier Simpson and Rion Thompson were named first team all-Three Rivers Athletic Conference it was announced Wednesday.

Fellow Spartans Elijay Pughsley, a senior, Jaylin Thomas, a junior and Essence Cowan,a junior, received second team honors. Lima Senior juniors Rico Stafford and Ruben Flowers and senior Imara Haynes were named honorable mention.

Senior Myles Copeland of Toledo St. John’s Jesuit was the boys player of the year and junior Byrdy Galernik of Toledo Central Catholic received the girls honor.

Ed Heintschel of St. John’s Jesuit and Corri Helldobler of Central Catholic were named the boys and girls coaches of the year respectively.

Relays canceled

WAYNESFIELD — The Joe R. Horn Tiger Relays scheduled for Saturday at Waynesfield-Goshen High School have been canceled due to the below freezing temperatures in the forecast.

ONU wrestlers honored

ADA — Four from Ohio Northern were named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-America team for 2014-15.

Senior Cody Lovejoy, junior Colt Lovejoy, both Allen East graduates, sophomore Gennar Feucht and freshman Aaron Adkins were among the 169 wrestlers country-wide to receive the honor.

Murphy at sectionals

PITTSBURGH — Shawnee graduate Emily Murphy is among members of Pittsburgh’s men’s and women’s swim team competing this weekend in the 2015 USA Swimming Spring Long Course Speedo Sectionals in Buffalo, N.Y., at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center at Erie Community College.

To compete, student-athletes had to meet a qualifying time associated with each event. Under USA Swimming sanctions, the meet will be held in long course meters compared to the short course yards Pitt has swum in all season. This meet will feature swimmers within the Eastern Zone region. Murphy is one of Pitt’s top competitors in the 50 freestyle and the school record in the event with a time of 23.06 seconds.
