More UNOH softball records eclipsed

CLERMONT, Fla. — The University of Northwestern Ohio softball team capped its second annual trip to the National Training Center Spring Games in style on Wednesday morning, finishing the Florida trip with a 6-4 mark, and riding a five game winning streak into Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play.

UNOH (9-7) scored in each of the five innings of play, eclipsing the single-game record of 18 runs scored Tuesday against Thomas College, in defeating the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears (4-14) 21-4.

Offensively, the Racers were led by Emily Rockman’s 3-for-3 effort and a new UNOH single game record six RBIs. Shelby Lucas was 3-for-4 in the game with three runs and an RBI, and Casey Yingst and Megan Pflum were each 2-for-3. Martin, Yingst, McQueen and Macey Harder each had two RBIs in the game, Pflum scored four runs, and Maranda Stansbery and Lucas each scored three times.

Chelsea Miller (3-3) got the win, throwing three and one-third innings of shutout softball, allowing two hits and one walk.

UNOH will open WHAC play in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this weekend, heading to Cornerstone for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Friday.

Bluffton drops two

TIFFIN — Bluffton (9-10) fell 11-10 in eight innings and 3-2 in a game called due to darkness in the fifth inning to Heidelberg (12-4). Ariana Muffo had five hits, including two doubles and a homer, and three RBIs for Bluffton.

Baseball

Bluffton 8, Defiance 7

BLUFFTON — The Beavers moved to 4-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and 11-5 overall. Jeff Roth had three hits and two RBIs and Tyler Spalding had three hits, including a triple, for the Beavers. Defiance fell to 1-3 in the conference and 6-6 overall.

All-HCAC

BLUFFTON — The HCAC recently announced the winter honorees of the HCAC All-Academic awards for the 2014-15 school year. Thirteen Bluffton University athletes were recognized for their efforts in the classroom.

Women’s basketball players Abby Jerger, Taylor Whitaker, Rachel Beining, an Ottoville graduate, and Kenton grad Gwen Downing, men’s basketball players Ryan Ebbeskotte. a Delphos Jefferson grad, Zach Rumbaugh, a Lima Senior graduate, Billy Taflinger, a Lima Central Catholic graduate, Mitchel Huffman, Trey Elchert, a Jackson Center graduate, and Adam Hopkins and track competitors Hannah Krull, Aron Gibson and Anna Hairston were recognized.

To be named All-Academic HCAC, a student-athlete must have completed a full year at the institution, be a varsity athlete and carry a minimum cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 through the semester preceding the end of the season.

Academic All-Ohio

BLUFFTON — The NCAA Division III recently announced the recipients of Academic All-Ohio honors for the 2014 season. Seven Bluffton University soccer players were honored for their performance on the field and in the classroom this season.

Marisa Aguilar, Abby Karikas and Kenton graduate Terrill Webb were selected to the women’s third team.

Ryan-Johnson Evers was selected to the men’s second team and Jordan Andrews, Jeff Yoder and Josh Carmack were third team honorees.

For Ohio Northern, David Janusz (first team), Kristina Klusek (first team), Dustin Lorenzo (second team), Emily Brodict (second team), Shelby Stephens (second team), Missy Ward (third team), Charles D’Imperio (third team) and Chad Smith (third team).

To qualify for Academic All-Ohio honors a player must have started in 50 percent of the matches, be a sophomore or above academically and have a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. In addition, the player should have participated in 50 percent of the team’s contests at the particular position listed and be a significant contributor to team’s success.

Local second

in ‘Hoop Shoot’

Temple Christian’s Brody Bowman finished second in the 12-13-year-old boys group during the fourth round of the Elks “Hoop Shoot” free throw contest held Saturday in Angola, Indiana. Brody, sponsored by the Lima Elks Lodge No. 54, made 21 out of 25 free throws.

Trapshoot on Sunday

CONTINENTAL — There will be a trapshoot for ham and boneless arm roast at the Continental Conservation Club at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

The club is located a half mile north and a half mile east of Continental on Road E. Practice and still target shooting will start at 11:30 a.m. with lunch and shells available.

There will also be a trapshoot at 6 p.m. Friday, April 3.
