NEW ORLEANS – Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones has appeared unfazed by anything that has happened to him on the field during his rise from obscurity to a playing in a national championship game.
Off the field, he has seen some reactions – including someone bursting into tears upon meeting him – that have amazed him.
“Not really being able to walk anywhere or go out in public without somebody recognizing you, somebody wanting to take a picture or wanting an autograph. I don’t mind that but it’s still unreal. Like, you really want an autograph or a picture with me? That’s probably one of the strangest things. It happened so fast,” Jones said.
“This is unreal, man. This is like a movie or a book. The best way I can describe it is that it is basically just unreal,” he said.
NOTES:
NEW OSU ASSISTANT?: Joe Schad of ESPN reported Sunday that Ohio State will add Tim Beck to its coaching staff, presumably as quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator.
Ed Warinner, the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach the last three seasons, is expected to take over the play-calling duties that Tom Herman handled. Herman has been hired as the University of Houston’s head coach.
Beck has been offensive coordinator at Nebraska the last four season.
CAREER OVER: Ohio State linebacker Trey Johnson, once a highly regarded recruit, will end his playing career because of arthritis in his right knee according to the Gwinnett (Ga.) Daily Post.
Johnson told The Post doctors said he might be able to play again but that he could have trouble doing everyday things like walking by the time he was 30 years old if he continue to play.
Johnson was rated a four-star recruit coming out of high school.
MARIOTA ON PLAYING QB: When Oregon’s Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Marcus Mariota was asked what it’s like playing quarterback in Oregon’s high-powered offense, he said, “It’s like being a point guard on a basketball team”
Mariota, a fourth-year junior, says he has not decided yet if he will enter the NFL draft.
LONG DISTANCE RECRUITING: Oregon has six players from Hawaii on its roster, including Mariota.
Two of those players are from Honolulu’s Punahou School, which counts Barack Obama, class of 1979, among its alumni.
