LIMA — Encore Theatre will bring one of the most popular television shows in the ’70s and ’80s to the stage for performances this weekend and Jan. 16 to 18.

The stage production of “Happy Days” will open at 8 p.m. today. The show continues at 8 p.m. Saturday and Jan. 16 and 17. Matinees begin at 2 p.m. Sunday and Jan. 18. Tickets are $17 for adults, $14 for seniors and $12 for youth. Call 419-223-8866.

It will bring back to life many popular characters, including Ralph Malph, Richie, Potsie, Pinky Tuscadero and the man everyone wanted to be, Arthur Fonzarelli, or “The Fonz.”

Director Missy Keller said the musical should appeal to the theater’s patrons, given their ages. The television series ran from 1974-1984.

The show picks up in a 1959 backdrop, right after Fonzi did his infamous shark jump in a 1979 episode. The musical was written by Garry Marshall, who was also the originator of the television show. Music and lyrics for the production were written by Hall of Fame songwriter Paul Williams.

Keller said the show is focused around the character’s favorite hangout, Arnold’s. The shop is in danger of demolition and the whole gang teams up to save it with a dance contest and a wrestling match. The characters dress the part, right down to varsity sweaters and bobby socks.
