On Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1, members of the First Evangelical and Reformed Church, 320 W. Wayne St., Lima, celebrated their 18th annual Super Bowl Sunday of Caring and Sharing.
A churchwide soup drive resulted in the collection of 4,510 cans of soup and 161 boxes of crackers, which were given to Churches United Pantry and the Lima Rescue Mission to feed hungry people in our Lima community.
In addition to this event, the church contributes throughout the year to support C.U.P.’s ministry of providing a variety of shelf grocery items and refrigerated foods to needy families. Offerings to the Rescue Mission help provide daily meals, clothing and lodging.
Souper Bowl Sunday started in 1990 with a single church in Columbia, South Carolina, and has now become a nationwide effort to feed hungry people. Former pro-football defensive end, Reggie White, with the Green Bay Packers and Campbell Soup Co. teamed up to promote a soup drive in the fight against hunger.
