Spartan mascot brings pride

Graduating in 1967 (Dave Cheney’s class and best friends since age 5) and now reading this Spartan Tradtion letter 48 years later brings back countless memories.

After leaving Lima Senior to go to Purdue, I have now been an Indiana resident for 44 years.

My wife, Joan (Hornung) Nicolet, also class of ‘67 and Spartan cheerleader from 1965-67, had the front-row view as the Spartan made his traditional lap around the perimeter of the gym.

We have been to hundreds of Indiana high school basketball games, where supposedly our state is the king of high school basketball . Both of us can proudly say we have never seen a mascot gather the attention of every eye in the audience (except maybe coach Penorwood) and fire up the Spartan faithful the way that the Workmans, the Offenbachers and all the others who played the role could do.

Our kudos to all who have played their part . Working in Indianapolis since 1971, home of the Indy 500 and the greatest spectacle in racing, I can now say I came from Lima Senior, home of the Lima Spartan, the greatest spectacle in mascots.
