LIMA — A man has been arrested and charged after a burglary and K-9 chase, when he was found hiding under a porch.
Police officials said Sedric D. Washington, 45, of Lima, broke into Dollar General, 691 S. Main St., at 11:43 p.m. Tuesday.
The same Dollar General was broken into by the same method Saturday. Officers with the Lima Police Department have not said whether Washington was the same burglar as that instance.
Lt. Patrick Coon said Washington broke into the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system in the business by breaking ductwork attached to the air conditioning unit and then climbed into the store via ceiling tiles.
Officials said Washington stole a large quantity of tobacco products and fled out a side door in the building.
Officer Aaron Montgomery arrived on scene and released his K-9 partner, Grizz, Coon said. Grizz tracked Washington from the intersection of Main and Kibby streets and was apprehended in the 500 block of Michael Avenue. Officers found him hiding under a porch.
According to the LPD’s Facebook page, during the encounter under the porch, Grizz bit Washington. Washington was then taken into custody and faces nine charges related to the incident.
Grizz was assaulted by Washington, however the dog’s injuries were not substantial, Coon said.
Washington was listed as homeless in the Lima area, Lt. Coon said. He was charged with breaking and entering on Dec. 22, according to court documents. At the time, his address was listed as 618 Scott St., Lima. The case’s status is listed as open.
Washington was being held in Allen County Jail.
