LIMA — For Brad Stubbs, a senior at Lima Senior High School, his school experience has him primed for leadership, thanks in part to DECA.
“DECA is an association of marketing students that prepares students who are interested in careers in hospitality, finance or business administration,” he said. “I am the chapter president for Lima Senior, as well as the state vice president for leadership development.”
Part of that preparation comes in the form of competitions, an area in which Stubbs has shined.
“I competed in a hospitality event last year and ended up making it to nationals, where I ranked in the top 18 percent,” he said. “This year, I competed in human resources management.”
These experiences, along with Stubbs’ time in Youth in Government through the YMCA, have given him the confidence to go into a career that excites him.
“I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer,” he said. “I specifically want to do labor law.”
Stubbs’ time at Lima Senior has not been all work, however. He has also made time for other endeavors, including being the captain of the Lima Senior swim team and quiz bowl team.
“I’m also a section leader in marching band and choir,” he said “I play the bass drum in marching band.”
Stubbs also participates in the Big Spartans, Little Spartans mentoring program, is a member of National Honors Society and helps to manage the DECA Spartan Spirit Shop. Also an employee at Happy Dāz, Stubbs knows how difficult it can be balancing so many commitments.
“It’s a struggle sometimes,” he said. “I’ve found that it’s best to give yourself some free time and rejuvenate yourself. I’ve done that through swimming, weight lifting or singing. The work then comes easier.”
Another area in which Stubbs can unwind is not well-known by his peers.
“I also like to write, and that’s something not a lot of people know,” he said. “I enjoy writing stories, articles and speeches.”
Given Stubbs’ high school experiences, he looks to be ready to write a successful narrative for his life.
