Killer back in court to finish sentencing hearing

LIMA — Patrick Coller was back in a courtroom to wrap up his sentencing Monday before he heads to prison for the rest of his life.

Judge David Cheney of Allen County Common Pleas Court brought the 43-year-old Coller back to court as a precaution to advise him of terms of probation should he ever be released, which the Ohio Supreme Court has ruled must be done regardless of the term the person received.

The catch to it all, Coller was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for release for the Aug. 14 killing of his wife, Gerri Coller, 42. Still, the state’s highest court has final say.

Coller shot his wife in a cornfield and left her body before telling police several hours later.

Coller pleaded guilty to aggravated murder with a firearm and kidnapping with a firearm in exchange for the prosecution taking the possibility of the death penalty off the table.

Cheney also advised Coller of his appellate rights.
