Hospital to offer symposium

LIMA — St. Rita’s Health Partners 2015 Cardiovascular Symposium will be April 9 at the UNOH Event Center. With sessions scheduled from 7:20 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the event is open to physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals. The symposium will provide cardiovascular knowledge and skills to all clinicians who care for patients with heart conditions. The curriculum fosters discussion among physicians and other healthcare professionals, and will allow care providers to discover what’s new in cardiovascular care.

Organizations announce new program

The Ohio Hospital Association and the Ohio Department of Health launched “Ohio First Steps for Healthy Babies,” a breastfeeding program to recognize maternity centers in Ohio that have taken steps to promote and support breastfeeding with new moms.

Through this new program, hospitals will be recognized based on progress toward achieving the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, as defined by the World Health Organization. The steps are intended to promote breastfeeding-supportive hospital environments and increase breastfeeding initiation and duration rates through policy and practice supports. Through the Ohio First Steps program, hospitals will be recognized for every two steps achieved and will have opportunities for learning and sharing of best practices.

Health system recognizes volunteers

ST. MARYS — Grand Lake Health System announced its recognition for 2015 National Volunteer Appreciation Month.

The Grand Lake Health System plans to recognize its more than 110 volunteers with a brunch and dinner April 29 at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital.

Counselors available on national healthcare decision day

LIMA — In honor of National Healthcare Decisions Day April 16, counselors with St. Rita’s Health Partners will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide information about various healthcare decisions including living wills, durable power of attorney for healthcare, U.S. Living Will Registry and Lifeline of Ohio. Counselors will also assist with the completion of documents at this time. The service will be available in St. Rita’s Health Resource Center located in the main lobby across from Starbucks.

Attendees should bring names, addresses and phone numbers of family and friends they would like to include in any documents. If someone is unable to attend the session at this time, he or she should contact St. Rita’s Spiritual Care at 419-226-9481 or email [email protected] to schedule an appointment.

Partnership with healthcare marketplace navigators extended

LIMA — St. Rita’s has extended its partnership with a Health Insurance Marketplace Navigator through the end of April.

Anyone wishing to meet with the Navigator can call 419-996-5842 to schedule an appointment.

Workshop for sign language available

CELINA — Grand Lake Health System will be offering an American Sign Language II Workshop led by a certified instructor.

The group will meet on six consecutive Tuesday evening times, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Auglaize-Mercer YMCA-North, state Route 703 in Celina. Classes begin on April 7 and continue April 14, 21, 28 and May 5 and 12.

The class involves learning the alphabet as well as basic vocabulary. Registration is required and limited to 12 participants. Cost is $25. To register, call 419-394-6290.

Local hospital receives award as top provider

LIMA — St. Rita’s Medical Center was honored as Tissue Recovery Hospital of the Year recently at the Lifeline Of Ohio’s annual awards ceremony.

St. Rita’s ICU manager and Delphos resident, Deann Heiing, was also recognized for her work improving communications between her department and Lifeline Of Ohio, talking to Delphos High Schools about organ donation, and hosting 5K runs for donation awareness. Heiing announced that double lung transplant recipient Amber Payne, along with Lifeline Of Ohio Procurement Coordinator Jackie Hines will be speaking to both Delphos high schools on April 10 and 20.

Another event to promote organ donation awareness will be the third annual Organ Donor Dash 5k run/walk. The walk starts at 1:08 p.m. April 26 at Delphos Jefferson High School.
