Dana, UAW donate

LIMA — As the Veterans Food Pantry moves from Memorial Hall to its new home on West North Street, community support has never been more important or needed.

“They keep us afloat,” said Kay Sellers, a co-director of the pantry.

That’s why donations from Dana Corp. and United Auto Workers Local 1765 on Thursday meant so much to the women who direct the pantry.

“It means we’re going to have product on our shelves to better serve our veterans,” Sellers said. “It means a lot.”

The local UAW 1765 members at Dana prompted the donation, as its members gave $500 and asked the company to match it — which it more than did, donating $2,500.

“The company went way above what we thought they would do,” said Archie Sawmiller, president of Local 1765. “The company always steps up.”

The Local 1765 tries to do a food drive each year for the food pantry and other local organizations, but this year, they knew the pantry was in “dire straits,” due to its move, and they wanted to give money, Sawmiller said.

“We knew it was our turn to help,” Sawmiller said. “We feel we absolutely do not do enough for our veterans.”
