BLUFFTON — Bluffton Police Chief Rick Skilliter issued a press release warning residents about scam phone calls.

Skilliter released tips on how to avoid being scammed by these callers: Use caller ID to screen calls, if applicable; if the caller asks you not to tell anyone about the phone call, you should be suspicious; callers will ask you to send money via ware transfer or gift cards.

Skilliter also said to have “fun,” pose questions to the caller to see if they will answer correctly, such as the name of your family pet or your family’s favorite vacation spot.

Skilliter said to immediately hang up and call police if you receive a call like this.
