LIMA — United Way of Greater Lima Executive Director Phil Hayne will be retiring later this year.

During the United Way of Greater Lima board meeting held Thursday, chairman Angie Clark announced Hayne will retire effective July 31 after four years with the local United Way organization.

“Phil has spent over 40 years in service to others, and we are extremely fortunate to have had an individual of his caliber at United Way of Greater Lima,” Clark said. “His leadership, passion and dedication to our organization is something we appreciate very much. He has worked hard to make us an even stronger organization, and leaves us well positioned for a positive and exciting future.”

Hayne joined the United Way of Greater Lima in 2011. Before moving to Lima, he was the chief professional officer of the United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area. Hayne also served as the executive director of a family service agency in Jackson, Michigan.

Among other things, Hayne was responsible for trying to bring a more positive image to the local United Way after he came on board.

“We are changing who we are, and our role in the community,” Hayne said in a past interview. “We don’t want to be viewed as only a money-making machine, we want to work to make the community stronger.”

The shift in focus came after United Way took a look at the job it was doing in meeting the needs of its member agencies, Hayne said. United Way wanted to help member agencies by offering more than money.
