LIMA — The Lima Public Library wants people to know that the library is about more than just books.
A family game day was held at the main branch Saturday with nearly 30 people attending. The result was lots of fun and quality time to spend together.
Nine-year-old Donovan Reed, of Delphos, said he was unsuccessful in the win column, but that he had fun nonetheless.
He attended the event with his aunt and his cousin, Sasha Reed.
“We played Monopoly, Trouble, checkers, and Fact or Crap,” Donovan said. “I didn’t win any.”
When asked who did all the winning, he pointed to his cousin and aunt.
“I still had fun playing the games,” Donovan said. “I will win some next time.”
The boy said that he frequently visits the library when he visits his aunt’s or grandma’s house, who live in Lima. However, he said it was his first time attending a family game day event.
TreVale Mustin, 6, attended with his mother and said it was also his first time to go to the event. It was his first time attending a game day event, but they visit the library frequently.
“I just like spending time with mom and having fun,” Mustin said, as he played Scrabble Slam with his mother.
Dani Mentz, an employee of the library and organizer of the event, said they have the family game night every few months. She said it was the most attended family game day they had experienced so far.
“It is part of our winter reading program,” Mentz said. “It gets families into the library to spend some time together and have some fun.”
Mentz said craft sessions and book discussion groups have been well-attended at the library, and they are hoping that family game days will also catch on even more.
“We want everyone to know that we are a community meeting place that allows people to come together and have some fun,” Mertz said. “We recently renovated the entire main floor, changed the shelving and the layout. This gives everyone a chance to check it out.”
Mentz said the family game days are not on a set schedule, but that the library holds them every few months.
