Lima man reaffirms self-representation after superseding indictment

LIMA — A Lima man reasserted he wants to represent himself by signing another waiver of counsel, and his bond increased to $1 million after a superseding indictment Thursday in the Allen County Common Pleas Court.

The new indictment for Leroy Page — to which he pleaded not guilty — includes specifications that were not contained in the original indictment, such as two firearm forfeitures, a one-year firearm specification and five repeat violent offender specifications.

The latter six specifications could bring additional prison time, and Judge Terri Kohlrieser said the repeat violent offender specifications could give Page 30 additional years for the first-degree felony counts and 20 years for the second-degree felony counts he’s facing.

This indictment was a result of the prosecution discovering Page, 34, was sentenced in 2007 for involuntary manslaughter.

The rest of the indictment remained the same, including charges of having weapons while under disability, improperly handing firearms in a motor vehicle, failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer, aggravated burglary, two counts of kidnapping, and two counts of felonious assault.

Page was given two weeks to raise any issues with the indictment and has until Nov. 29 to file any motions. The final pretrial in the case is set for Feb. 4, and a jury trial is scheduled to start Feb. 24.

While discussing the bond increase — which was previously set at $500,000 — Prosecutor Destiny Caldwell said Page received nine years in prison for the involuntary manslaughter charge and was released on post-release control in 2016. About a year later, he was recommitted for carrying a concealed weapon in Sandusky County and re-released on post-release control in June 2022. About four months later, Page allegedly committed the current crimes.

According to a news release from the Allen County Sheriff’s Office at the time, Page was involved in a vehicle pursuit on Oct. 30, 2022, with the Lima Police Department when he crashed the vehicle near the intersection of West Elm Street and Fraunfelter Road. He reportedly fled the scene and forced his way into a residence on Fraunfelter Road where he “continuously assaulted” the homeowners for about two hours before forcing the residents to drive him to the intersection of Yoakam Road and West Breese Road. Page then fled the area, according to the report.

Page was apprehended this year in Las Vegas on July 31 and was extradited to Allen County.

A Crime Victim Services representative said the victims are still scared due to this incident and don’t attend the court hearings because of it.
