Letter: Childhood lessons ring true as election nears

Can what we learned in kindergarten help us heal as a nation?

An old friend reached out to me recently. I was 5 years old when I moved into her neighborhood, and she was my first best friend in a new town. She got me thinking about some of the things we did to encourage equial treatment.

We would walk to each other’s houses, but we would always meet in the middle (by the “white house,” ironically) and finish the rest of the walk together.

We had a practice when sharing snacks. One person poured, and the other person got to choose which glass she wanted. It kept the other person honest in their distribution of the pop.

I also thought about some things we were taught in kindergarten, such as keep your hands to yourself, use your manners and raise your hand before you speak. Most of us went to kindergarten, so I assume we all learned these lessons in personal conduct.

As we enter the last few weeks before the election and prepare ourselves for what might be a contentious transfer of power, similar to what we experienced in 202, we would do well to remember those basic life lessons we learned as children: Be kind, be fair, be honest.
