Bath fire department responds to house blaze

BATH TOWNSHIP — A fire starting in an attic caused an estimated $50,000 in damage and caused minor injuries to two family members who escaped Tuesday night.

The Bath Township Fire Department responded to 3323 Shearin Ave. after receiving a call for a house fire at 9:57 p.m. Tuesday, according to a press release from the fire department. Firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the attic and extinguished the fire in approximately 30 minutes.

The home was owned by Steven Spees, and his family was home at the time. Two occupants escaped with minor injuries and were treated and released at the scene by Bath Township EMS.

Investigators, who ruled the blaze accidental, believed the fire was electrical in nature and started in the attic. They estimated $30,000 damage to the house and an additional $20,000 damage to the contents, and Spees said the home was insured. The two-bedroom home, built in 1946 and remodeled in 1987, was valued at $48,100, according to the Allen County Auditor’s website.

The American Township Fire Department and Lima Fire Department also responded with additional apparatus and personnel. There were no injuries to any firefighters.
