Patrol identifies two men killed in crash near Van Wert

VAN WERT — Two people died after being rear-ended on U.S. Route 127 near milepost 7 around 11 a.m. Monday in Van Wert County.

According to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Zachary Wood, 30, of Convoy, was traveling southbound on U.S. Route 127 when he stopped to turn left into a private driveway. Timothy Kiester, 61, of Berrien Springs, Michigan, was behind Wood and rear-ended him, causing Wood’s vehicle to travel into the northbound lane of U.S. Route 127, where he was struck by a semi-truck driven by Christopher Poland, 33, of Niles.

Wood and his passenger, Logan Elder, 29, of Van Wert, were pronounced dead on the scene. Poland was transported to OhioHealth in Van Wert.
