Lima man pleads guilty to reduced charge

LIMA — A Lima man pleaded guilty to a reduced assault charge Tuesday in the Allen County Common Pleas Court after a shooting earlier this year at a Lima park that left a male with non-life-threatening injuries.

The second-degree felonious assault charge given to Anthonio Briggs, 37, was reduced to a fourth-degree aggravated assault charge, and the attached firearm specification was dismissed. With this dismissal, Briggs will avoid the mandatory three-year prison sentence that the specification carried.

The state will make no recommendation on Briggs’ sentence, and a pre-sentence investigation was ordered before sentencing occurs on Nov. 19.

Briggs has been on house arrest with an ankle monitor, and Judge Terri Kohlrieser allowed him to be off of both with the exception of following a curfew and having continued no contact with the victim.

According to court documents, the Lima Police Department received a 911 call shortly before noon on May 31 reporting an argument between several individuals at Faurot Park. One of the people had a gun and was pointing it at the others involved, the caller said.

Police learned the man with the gun, later identified as Briggs, had shot a 20-year-old male in the leg during a gathering among acquaintances at the park that turned violent. Briggs told police he felt threatened when several members of one family attempted to assault him.
