Ottawa man denied bond reduction

LIMA — An Ottawa man’s $75,000 bond remained the same Monday after Judge Jeffrey Reed denied a reduction in Allen County Common Pleas Court.

Jonathon Gillette’s attorney, Public Defender Kenneth Sturgill, argued for an own-recognizance bond with an ankle monitor or a bond reduction because there was no violence or theft in the incident. Gillette, 35, was charged with burglary, a second-degree felony, and two counts of violating a protection order, third- and fifth-degree felonies. Sturgill said Gillette also has no prior felonies in the county.

Assistant Prosecutor Joshua Carp said according to Crime Victim Services, the victim is fearful of Gillette, and he has a history of violating the same protection order, with the most recent conviction for a violation being November 2023. A Crime Victim Services representative confirmed the victim said the harassment she received from Gillette has been escalating, and he never entered her home before until this incident.

Another pretrial is scheduled for Oct. 28, and a jury trial is set to begin Dec. 10.
