Real Wheels:

KENTON — Pleasing the kids.

Doing so costs Steve Sons two pickup trucks. It’s a story he likes to tell, one that goes back to 1984 when he bought his first pickup, a 1955 Ford F-100.

“I promptly went out and blew up the engine,” the 65-year-old Kenton man said. “I got it fixed, and then went out and blew it up again. At that point, I decided to sell the truck.”

That’s when his daughter, Connie Tannee, stepped in.

“She told me, ‘You can’t sell it.’ She said the truck has been in the family longer than she has.”

“I asked her if she wanted it,” Sons said, “and she told me to give it to to her … that she’d rather fix it up than sell it.”

And fix it up she did. Sons proudly showed pictures of the refurbished truck to people attending the Star Spangled Spectacular Fourth of July Cruise-In at Faurot Park in Lima.

Giving the car to his daughter left him with one problem though, he said: “In fairness to my son, I thought I needed to get him a truck, too.”

Two years ago he did just that, buying his son, Jeremy, a 1956, Ford F-100. He and Jeremy are in the process of restoring it. Steve took it to the cruise-in to show it off. He also noted he’s not done buying vintage F-100s yet.

“Now that my daughter and son have F-100s, that leaves me as the only one who doesn’t have one. I’ll need to fix that.”
