Task force discusses D.C. trip to promote tank plant

LIMA — For decades, Task Force Lima has brought both public and private entities together to promote the work of Lima’s Joint Systems Manufacturing Center.

While the plant is enjoying a relatively stable season when it comes to employment, the task force is still working to promote the tank plant among the nation’s top decision-makers.

Task force members discussed organizing a trip to the nation’s capital to meet with lawmakers and Pentagon officials to promote the JSMC during a meeting Thursday at the Allen County Department of Job and Family Services.

“We have an excellent asset here called the JSMC,” Allen Economic Development Group President and CEO Cynthia Leis said. “Our congressional leaders really need to understand the importance of this company, not only to our community and our region but really for the overall national defense.”

Discussions at Thursday’s meeting focused on initial logistics for the meeting, including possibilities for flights and accommodations. While no firm date has yet been set, the task force is focusing on a time frame later in the winter, such as February or March.

Leis also noted the partnerships related to workforce development at the tank plant.

“We’re continuing to work with many companies across the county, with Ohio Means Jobs being a very supportive partner,” she said. “JSMC is seeking employment, as well, so we want to help them as well as all the other businesses across the county when it comes to workforce development.”

The next task force meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Dec. 12.
