Initiative asks gardeners to donate produce

WAPAKONETA — Gardeners in West Central Ohio are encouraged to donate extra fruits and vegetables from their gardens to food pantries through the Plant a Row for the Hungry initiative.

“We know that many of our talented area gardeners are seeing great crops, and encourage them to share this bounty with those in their community who would benefit from fresh, locally produced food,” local organizer Rachel Barber said in a news release.

Gardeners who choose to donate their harvest should select fruits and vegetables free from mold, spoilage, bruising or insects, and keep each type of produce in separate, clean containers or bags.

Call ahead before bringing donations to participating food pantries, especially when delivering large quantities of produce, to alert pantry workers of your arrival.

• Jackson Center: Fish Pond Food Pantry, 310 Davis St.; Barb, 937-596-5463
