Ohio Turnpike customers set record numbers for miles traveled

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Drivers using the state’s toll road set a record for the number of miles traveled last year, according to the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission.

Cars and commercial truck drivers drove 3.1 billion miles on the turnpike in 2023, up 2.2% from 2022′s totals.

Last year, car travelers drove more than 1.9 billion miles, up 5.2% from the year before. Commercial truck drivers traveled more than 1.1 billion miles, a 2.2% decrease from the record set in 2022.

The number of vehicle trips on the toll road increased by 2.3%. In all, people took 50.7 million trips on the turnpike. Drivers in cars made at least 38 million trips, while commercial trucks made about 12.5 million.

Additionally, the number of cars and commercial trucks that used the E-ZPass increased last year. More than 64% of customers in passenger cars used E-ZPass, up 2.1% in 2023. More than 89% of commercial truck drivers used it, up 0.4% in 2023.

The system allows drivers to enter and exit the state’s toll road without having to stop to pay a ticket. It uses a transponder to monitor the miles driven. E-ZPass customers save about a third on tolls, turnpike officials say.
