Seffernick trial set for Feb. 6

LIMA — A Lima man who engaged in a standoff with police for nearly 16 hours last summer will stand trial on Feb. 6 in Allen County Pleas Court.

Attorneys met behind closed doors Monday to set a trial date for Mark Seffernick, 59, who was indicted by a grand jury in August on 13 counts of felonious assault with firearm specifications, improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation and improperly discharging a firearm on or near a prohibited premises.

Seffernick held police at bay for hours last July while barricaded inside his home at 1008 E. Albert St.

Police were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call about a man reportedly threatening another with a gun.

Seffernick retreated into the house and barricaded the front door when police arrived. Gunshots were fired from the residence at police on three separate occasions over the course of the evening. None of those shots led to injuries.

A SWAT team from the Allen County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched and attempted, without success, to force open the door to the residence. A telephone link between Seffernick and detectives was subsequently established.

Another unnamed individual was in the home with Seffernick but that person was able to exit unharmed. The person also brought a weapon out of the residence, police said at the time.

The incident finally ended nearly 16 hours after it began when Seffernick emerged voluntarily and surrendered to police.

Seffernick will stand trial next month after a mental health evaluation performed by the Forensic Psychiatry Center for Western Ohio in Dayton declared that Seffernick is fit to contribute to his defense.
