Auglaize County Clerk of Courts Meckstroth set to retire

WAPAKONETA — Auglaize County commissioners approved a resolution on Tuesday passing the baton for clerk of courts from Jean Meckstroth to Kathy Wahl.

Meckstroth will begin her retirement on Friday, June 30.

Kahl, a former deputy clerk, is set to begin her term as clerk of courts on July 1.

Meckstroth said she took a job opening that “sort of fell” in her hands in January of 1981.

“A friend of my sister worked there,” Meckstroth said. “At the last minute they gave me a call for an interview, and I was hired four days later. It was not my ultimate goal, but it just happened. I was newly married and young, and we wanted a second income.”

Meckstroth said she has worked at the common pleas and municipal courts for a total of 42 1/2 years.

“I work with so many commissioners and a couple of different judges,” Meckstroth said. “The most memorable moment is seeing what the court used to be and what it is today. Laws change all the time, and you have to follow what the laws are. You learn one way, then legislatures make changes, and it is very important we are in compliance (with the law). It is very detailed.”

Meckstroth said one major change was when the courtroom was renovated. The department vacated the building for two years starting in 2010. During this time, Meckstroth was appointed as clerk of courts. She also experienced the transitions from manual processes to the courts becoming computerized in 2000.

“Time has gone so fast, but I am ready for retirement,” Meckstroth said. “My husband retired, and I just look forward to being with my family, getting out and traveling. I just want to get out and enjoy life.”

Meckstroth said she and her husband have five grandchildren they are eager to spend free time with.

“I just thank the citizens for electing me three times unopposed,” Meckstroth said. “I just want to thank Wanda Kogge (former clerk of courts in 1988) and Sue Ellen Kohler (former clerk of courts in 2011). If it wasn’t for those two ladies seeing potential, I wouldn’t be here. I have had great coworkers and employees. I appreciate all of them. I wish the next person the best.”
