Apollo apprenticeship program is expanding

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — The Apollo school board took another step in the construction of Apollo Career Center Regional Public Safety Building. The board approved a resolution to retain the law firm of Bricker & Eckler to provide attorney services for the building project.

The board also heard a presentation by Toby Prinsen, assistant director of adult education, business and industry liaison concerning the apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs available at Apollo. Apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs are valuable tools for developing a skilled workforce, promoting diversity and inclusion, and supporting career development.

The apprenticeship program at Apollo is expanding.

“Just about every non-union company from Sidney to Ottawa and from over to Spencerville to Kenton if they have an apprentice, they go here,” Prinsen said.

Working with area businesses, including Ford, Dana and Rudolph Foods, Apollo develops quality workers to join the local workforce.

Having a strong adult apprenticeship program then allows for a pre-apprenticeship program.

Prinsen said, “Since our Adult Ed was a registered sponsor, this made it seamless for us to take it down to the pre-apprenticeship side. We are able to be one site for construction, manufacturing, electrical and HVAC.

Apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs allow individuals to receive hands-on training in a specific trade or occupation. This on-the-job training is accompanied by classroom instruction, which helps apprentices develop the technical and practical skills necessary to succeed in their chosen field. By completing an apprenticeship program, individuals acquire the knowledge and experience needed to become highly skilled workers in their industry.
