Letter: The times they are a-changin’

Bob Dylan’s song “The Times They Are A-Changin’” was released in 1964 to characterize “a sweet spot between protesting for the changes mankind needs and also accepting that some things are just meant to be.”

The midterm elections placed Congress on a threshold of change. Maybe it’s the type of change that former President Obama may have alluded to in his campaign speeches. During the midterm elections, the country focused on the events and rhetoric of the past months leading up to the election while disregarding the strong winds of change like the winds that rocked Lima two weeks ago.

There were numerous articles and media programs focused on discussing the balance of power in Congress that we seemingly misunderstood the ideological principles of the candidates. The Baby Boomers were trying to push through their agenda based upon their past philosophical principles of independence, strong work ethic, self-assurance, competitiveness and goal-centric that they forgot about their children who were of age and now running on their generational philosophical principles of diversity, use of technology, mental health issues, financial mindedness, shrewd consumerists and being political progressives.

The change may have contributed to 55 members of Congress — six in the U.S. Senate and 49 in the U.S. House — who opted to either retire or not seek re-election.

As the Baby Boomers decline and the Generation Z, Zoomers or iGeneration increase in numbers, what changes will our democracy undergo in the future? What will be the new norm, and what kind of change will Generation Alpha babies born after 2010 make on the country? Are the storm clouds receding or collecting energy? Nonetheless, today is “Blowing in the Wind.”
