Ohio State football: Chambers’ best football ahead of him, Day says

COLUMBUS — Ryan Day appreciated what linebacker Steele Chambers did last year and expects even more this season.

Chambers went from being a back-up running back to being one of the most productive linebackers Ohio State had in a matter of a couple of months last fall.

“When you sit back and look at what he did, it was around this time last summer that he moved from running back to linebacker and played a good amount. It said a lot about him as a person and his ability to throw himself right into the fire. He was not afraid to fail, he would just go,” Day said during a press conference on Thursday.

“Now, with a year of playing the position, it gives him a chance to be the best version of himself and play his best football,” he said.

Earlier this week, Chambers indicated he’s all in on being a linebacker. “I feel like I’m a linebacker at this point. There’s no going back. You can’t just dip a toe, you’ve got to jump in,” he said.

Some other thoughts from Day at his press conference:

• Cornerback concerns temporary: Day said some of OSU’s cornerbacks are dealing with injuries but they are not long-term issues.

“A couple of guys are bumped and bruised but hopefully we’ll get them back soon,” he said.

• Egbuka looking good: Sophomore wide receiver Emeka Egbuka got a very positive review from Day.

“He made an impact on special teams last year. He’s really intelligent, really sharp. His toughness is off the charts, his work ethic is off the charts. His ball skills are really good. If he keeps putting days in front of days he’s going to have a really good year,” Day said.

• Styles impressive: Like defensive coordinator Jim Knowles on Tuesday, Day said he has been impressed with freshman safety Sonny Styles, who reclassified to enroll at Ohio State this year instead of next year when his his high school class will graduate.

“For someone who’s supposed to be in high school now he’s doing very well,” Day said.

“In the opportunities he’s had to compete he’s shown he’s got toughness. He’s shown an ability to be coached pretty hard and he takes it and works to get better. He’s off to a wonderful start.”

• USC transfer still waiting: Kicker Parker Lewis, who has transferred to Ohio State from USC, is still waiting for the NCAA to approve his eligibility. The issue keeping him from joining the Buckeyes in practice is an academic one.

“We’re hoping to hear something soon,” Day said.

• Ransom’s return: Safety Lathan Ransom, who suffered a broken leg in the Rose Bowl, “has had a very good summer,” Day said.

“That says a lot about Lathan’s ability to recover and the work he put in. He’s on the list of guys we keep an eye on to make sure they’re good. But he’s been able to handle it and that says a lot about him.”
