This week’s updates on the coronavirus pandemic

COVID risk level remains ‘high’ in Allen County

• Allen County’s COVID-19 community risk level remains high, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There were 12 new hospital admissions for COVID-19 illness per 100,000 people in the Allen County area in the last seven days, the CDC reported Friday. At the same time, patients with COVID-19 occupied 2.7% of staffed inpatient beds.

Public health officials are urging residents in high-risk communities to wear well-fitting masks in indoor public places and to stay up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Anyone who develops symptoms consistent with COVID-19 should get tested to avoid spreading the virus.

• The CDC elevated Auglaize and Van Wert counties to high risk Friday due to rising case counts and hospital admissions from those counties. Putnam and Hardin counties remain under medium risk alerts, during which high-risk populations are encouraged to wear masks indoors to reduce the chances of contracting the virus.

• There were no new deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the five-county region reported to the Ohio Department of Health as of Thursday.

New vaccine available at ACPH

• Allen County Public Health on Friday confirmed the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine is now available for those who have not had their initial vaccine series.

The two-dose vaccine, which was recently approved for emergency use by the CDC, uses a more traditional protein-subunit technology than the mRNA vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna. The vaccine is only available for those who have yet to undergo their initial vaccine series, but may later be approved for use as a booster shot too.
